How to Prepare for Your Dishwasher Installation

How to Prepare for Your Dishwasher Installation

We understand that most people alter their work schedule to wait for appliance delivery and installation services. Therefore, it really helps to get the job done right the first time.

We want everything to go smoothly to save you time. As part of our dishwasher buying guide we’ve prepared the following quick 4-step dishwasher installation checklist to prevent repeat trips along with last minute hardware store visits.

Preparing for Installation in 4 Steps

Step 1) Measure

Measuring just two basic dimensions will help eliminate most fit problems

Measure the width of your current dishwasher. Also record the distance from under the countertop to the floor.

Provide this information to your sales person, so she can cross check it against the new dishwasher dimensions.

Finally, let us know if you are replacing an old European dishwasher with an American model as the new product may protrude off your cabinets.

Step 2) Buy the Correct Parts

Homes have different electric/plumbing connections – Be prepared with an installation kit

Dishwashers used to come with installation parts. Over the years, manufacturers skimped on parts in the interest of keeping costs down. Basics such as the water intake hose, and power cord do not come in original packaging. For this reason please make sure to order a universal parts kit prior to your installation. costs approximately $20

Not required for Miele dishwashers. These dishwashers come with a power cord as well as sophisticated intake and discharge hoses that help with leak detection.

Step 3) Locate & Inspect Your Water Shut-off Valve

Corroded valves are the number one reason for dishwasher leaks after an installation

If you live in a New York City apartment or in an older home, you will appreciate watching out for this step.

Check to see if the water shut-off valve is located under the sink or in an accessible cabinet close by. Ensure the shut-off valve is corrosion-free, in good working condition, has a metal connection and requires no plumbing alterations to connect.

Knowing the condition of your water shut off valve, your installer will come prepared with necessary parts. You will also appreciate knowing the total cost of installation without last minute surprises.

We noticed some older apartments, especially in New York City, do not have water shut off valves and the super may need to be involved.

Finally, do not worry if you cannot see the valve under your sink/counter. Professional installers usually carry shut-off valves with them in order to prevent leaks. Typically they charge an extra fee for valve replacement.

Step 4) Locate Your Electric Panel

Safety is paramount when it comes to installation

Locate your electrical panel so it is safe to turn off power to your kitchen during installation. If possible verify that there is a regular 110 Volt outlet under the counter. (Hardwired installations are no longer permitted by insurance companies and most towns.)

An electrical outlet is positioned so a 5’ cord can reach it.
If you cannot locate your electrical outlet please let your Designer Appliances sales person know.

What to Expect Day of Delivery

  1. You will have a delivery window (likely 4 hours)
  2. Have your cell phone close. Keep in mind that your installers will call you to let you know that you are the next stop (usually 30-60 minutes prior)
  3. Clear the pathway to your appliance, protect delicate items such as furniture

It’s exciting to get a new dishwasher and these days installation is quick and easy. This list may not include all “edge cases” we see in non-standard kitchens, however, it will ensure a smooth process for most people.

If you have any questions about your dishwasher installation, please reach out to us.

‘Edge Cases’ To Watch Out

  • If you purchased a dishwasher that costs less than $599 and have solid surface countertops (e.g., granite, quartz, stone) chances are you will need side mounting brackets to secure your dishwasher to the adjacent cabinets.(Most dishwashers come with side mounting brackets. However, dishwashers under $599 generally do not have this part included in their packaging.)

  • Flooring is obstructing the front legs of the unit.

  • Dishwashers with custom wood panels – Make sure the new dishwasher is able to accept your old panels. If you are unsure please contact your sales person with the model number of your existing dishwasher.

  • In brand new kitchens make sure the sink and garbage disposal are connected and operational and the countertops and cabinets are installed.
