When people first see a Big Green Egg, they are always intrigued as it can be hard to understand what it does. Is the Big Green Egg a smoker? How is it different from a regular charcoal grill? Is it fun to use? Often the question arises: I already have a gas grill – is it worth investing in a Big Green Egg, too?
Big Green Egg has created a cult following over the years. They are the most well known Kamado ceramic grill maker on the market and for good reason. The green egg grill cookers are made of the highest quality materials, can be used all year round and the community they have created inspires bbqers around the world. Big Green Egg users (a.k.a. the Eggheads) are always eager to talk about their experiences with their Egg, share recipes, tips and most importantly, their food. When you buy a Big Green Egg you are buying into a lifestyle.
At Designer Appliances, we are big enthusiasts of Big Green Egg and wanted to share why we feel this way about this Kamado style grill and smoker. In fact, many of our staff own an Egg and are firmly attached to the quality of how our barbecue and smoked foods turn out. If you are around any of our stores over the weekends, you will often see us preparing staff lunch on a Big Green Egg. You’re always welcome to join us!
Big Green Egg Prices
Big Green Egg encourages customers to visit local stores to get the best possible information about this fun product. They also encourage trying out the versatile methods of cooking that these ceramic grills offer. With a preference for in-person connection, they frown upon publishing prices online. And, afterall, ceramic eggs can be prone to chipping unless they are delivered by a local store that has experience handling them.
A local store, such as Designer Appliances in New Jersey and New York have trained sales people who know how to cook, smoke and barbecue on a Big Green Egg. 5 Reasons Why You Will Love The Big Green Egg
1- Versatility in what you can accomplish
When you buy a Big Green Egg, you are not just buying a grill or a smoker. They call it the ultimate cooking experience for a reason, you can essentially cook anything on it. If you want to slow cook a pork butt, you can easily control it to cook low and slow at 200 degrees for up to 18 hours on one load of charcoal. If you want to sear a thick-cut-steak like a pro, you can get the Big Green Egg up to 750 degrees and do that as well. The Big Green also holds heat and surround cooks better than any pizza oven. And when it is time for dessert this will surround bake cookies or a pie to perfection.
2- Ease of use
We hear a lot of concerns people have that it will be difficult to use or take forever to heat up. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You can be ready to cook on your BGE in 10 minutes after lighting charcoal, which is about the same time a gas grill takes to heat up and far faster than traditional charcoal grills.
The green egg grill is also very easy to use and quite forgiving. When you close the dome of the unit, it creates a tight seal. This does two significant things; 1-It makes controlling and holding a consistent temperature super easy using the top and bottom air controls. An easy to read thermometer on the dome gives a temperature reading. 2-Moisture is held inside the unit, so your food doesn’t dry out.
3- Healthy method of cooking
We highly recommend using lump charcoal to smoke and barbecue (a bag retails at around $25.99 for a 20 lb bag) Mesquite lump charcoal and wood chips makes all the difference.
Why Choose the Big Green Egg Lump Charcoal?
- Big Green Egg – the company – sets extremely high standards to certify that their charcoal is all natural carbonized wood without additives, fillers, nitrates, chemicals, anthracite coal, limestone, or petroleum products.
- Lump charcoal starts faster
- Lump charcoal burns cleaner
- Lump charcoal get hotter and lasts longer
Combine it with your favorite wood-chips (we love cherry wood and hickory) for flavor and you will be the official grill-master of your neighborhood.
The product is held to the highest standards as far a quality is concerned. You can certainly go buy a cheap grill and smoker at a big box store and save a couple bucks. However, you will not get the same results, and you will probably need to replace it within 5 years. When you buy a Big Green Egg, you are making an investment as it comes with a Lifetime warranty. Beccause they are ceramic, you don’t risk rust. Essentially, this should be the last outdoor cooking appliance that you have to buy.
5- It is fun
Once you become the grill-master for your family, you will likely become part of the Egghead community and do a lot of recipe swapping. This is especially true during the holidays when smoking a turkey or brisket gives a little more meaning to each celebration. We’ve known people to expand their green egg arsenal with a Mini-Max to enjoy easy evenings just for two. Cooking on the Big Green Egg is fun and brings a lot of joy to outdoor entertaining.

Without the Conveggtor in place, the Big Green Egg is used as a more traditional grill and is perfect for cooking things like steak, burgers, fish and vegetables. With the conveggtor in place, it turns your Egg into a roaster or smoker for indirect cooking methods. The Conveggtor is a ceramic plate that allows the air to flow and circulate around the Egg like a convection oven. With the conveggtor in place it is ideal for roasting a whole chicken, cooking pizza, or a long, slow cook for ribs and brisket. The moisture retained in the Egg while cooking fills your food with flavor and retains all of the natural juices of what you are making.
Purchasing a Big Green Egg is no quick decision. It is an investment in a lifestyle and you want to take care of your Egg. The Big Green Egg covers are made from heavy duty, UV protected materials and are made to withstand the elements and protect your Egg.
The Big Green Egg’s charcoal is not like any other charcoal on the market. It is all natural hardwood charcoal in large chunks and because of it’s size, it lasts longer, creates less ash and is more efficient than other hardwood charcoal brands.
These firestarters from Big Green Egg are made from all natural ingredients and get nestled in your charcoal for a quick, efficient light.
Ash Pan & Tool
It is essential to clean your Egg out before each use. You will want to get all of the ash out of the bottom of your Egg. The Ash Tool is an essential tool for all Big Green Egg users. They are designed to fit through the vent into the firebox for quick removal of the ash that you scrape onto the Ash Pan for disposal.
This is the perfect tool for lifting the grate off your Egg when you need to add more charcoal, need to add or remove the conveggtor for indirect cooking mode to grilling mode, or vice versa. The grid lifter is comfortable and slides easily into place to lift the grill off.
Big Green Egg Accessories for Steak Lovers
Cast Iron Cooking Grates
While the stainless steel grates included with the Big Green Egg are incredibly durable, upgrade to the cast iron cooking grates when you want steak house quality food. The Cast Iron grates get very hot, retain their heat and give you restaurant style sear marks on your steaks and chops.
The plancha griddle is also made out of cast iron and provides a great cooking surface for searing meats, vegetables and seafood.
For chicken and turkey, these ceramic cookers are awesome! They infuse your meat with so much flavor and moisture. Fill the ceramic cooker with your favorite liquid (beer, bourbon, cider), herbs and spices, then sit your poultry directly on the ceramic cooker and roast until done. When you carve the meat, it will fall right off the bone.

Big Green Egg Tools for the Ultimate Pizza
The Big Green Egg is the perfect thing for making Brick Oven quality pizza, however you’ll need to arm yourself with the right tools to get the job done.
Want the best pizza ever? It can be made in the Big Green Egg using the baking stone. Put your pizza on the pre-heated baking stone and you will get a wonderful crispy crust. The ceramic stone pulls the moisture out of your crust for brick-oven style pizza. Is it just for fresh, homemade pizza? No, pull out that frozen pizza and pop it in the Egg. How to start a Big Green Egg
Once you get your firestarters (retails around $6.95) ready
follow these 4 easy steps to become a Grill Master:
Build a small pyramid of lump charcoal and place the firestarter in the middle.
Light up the firestarter (you can use 1 or 2 starters if you wish)
Let the firestarter do its job for 10-15 minutes. IMPORTANT – while you are starting your Big Green Egg keep the top lid open. Make sure the bottom is clear of past ashes, and the small vent in the bottom is fully open.
Here is what you will get within 10-15 minutes. Several nicely charred lump coal pieces. Now you can close the top lid and leave the top-vent open on the metal cap.

How does Big Green Egg work?
Here is a really descriptive explation of how a Big Green Egg works:
What is a conveggtor?
Big Green Egg Conveggtor (i.e. convector) is a ceramic plate you can use to separate the grill area from direct flames. This heavy ceramic allows you to do indirect cooking and prevents flareups. Just make sure to place the egg conveggtor legs ups as most people install it intuitively legs down.
Can I use regular charcoal in a Big Green Egg?
Yes, you can use regular charcoal in a Big Green Egg. However, please make sure not to use lighter fluid or charcoal dipped in quick lighting solutions. We recommend the Big Green Egg organic lump charcoal, which costs around $19.99 for a large bag. The lump charcoal is healthier, burns cleanly, and achieves the desired temperature faster than most other fuel types.
What’s so special about the Big Green Egg?
Ceramic earthenware cooking dates back to ancient times. Fast forward to modern days, and entertaining and inspired cooking has never been easier than from our Big Green Egg grill. The company has developed accessories based on suggestions made by the Egghead community as they continue to swap tales and share secrets. We love the all-season versatility of smoking our Thanksgiving turkey during a November snowfall, smoking wings for Superbowl or grilling a brisket for Passover on a chilly morning.
Why does the Big Green Egg offer such a small Mini-Max size?
There are times that call for a small, intimate celebration and lighting a full bag of charcoal may seem downright wasteful. Enter Mini-Max. We love the versatility of Mini-Max when a special occasion or a quick meal is in order. They are also highly portable for taking camping or to a vacation home.
