The refrigerator is one of those appliances that can become moldy and grimy in a short amount of time, and it’s no wonder – it happens to be one of the most used appliances in the kitchen. However, you don’t have to be afraid of what you might find behind that carton of milk or eggs in your fridge as long as you keep it clean. Routine maintenance is critical to not only prevent the development of bacteria, but ensure that your appliance is operating efficiently over time. Here are some tips for keeping your refrigerator odor and germ-free.
1. Keep cleaning supplies nearby
If you have to go digging for cleaning tools every time you want to wipe down your fridge, you’re going to be less inclined to clean it. TLC recommended keeping a bucket, rag and bottle of cleaning solution close to your refrigerator so all you need to do it grab it when it comes time for a cleaning. You’ll thank yourself later!
2. Clean the shelves
It doesn’t take long for shelves to develop grime, which is why you need to stay on top of it regularly. Real Simple magazine stated that simply removing the shelves and giving them a quick rinse in sudsy warm water will do the trick. Amana has several models that contain glass shelves, which are durable and beautiful – don’t let these components of your refrigerator become lackluster!
3. Get dusting
Unplug the refrigerator for a few minutes to get under the appliance and wipe away any dust. If you haven’t done this in awhile, be prepared for quite a dirty surprise! Regularly dusting – specifically around the coils – can keep your refrigerator operating efficiently for longer.
4. Clean off the exterior
No one wants to look at a dirty refrigerator – don’t forget about exterior of your appliance during the cleaning process! If you have a stainless steel refrigerator, consider using a mixture of white vinegar and warm water to sanitize the front of the appliance and eliminate grime. Refrigerators composed of all other materials can be wiped down with a multipurpose cleaner and a clean towel. A sparkling fridge can make you feel better about the contents inside.
By taking these key tips into consideration, you can keep your refrigerator around for longer and not have to worry about bacteria.
